Fixed-Head / Traditional Rotary Installation

Description

Our Traditional Fixed-Head Rotary Hoist installation includes digging and concreting the centre post into your backyard, creating a long-lasting and ultra-stable drying solution. This iconic style is perfect for large families and generous backyards, with high line capacity and rotating arms that catch the breeze for faster drying. Installed at a height that suits the user, the hoist is set level and spins freely, with wire lines spaced wide apart to fit bulky items like king sheets and towels. Please allow approximately 2–3 hours for installation, including setup and clean-up.

Specifications

The traditional fixed-head rotary hoist — often recognised as the iconic Hills Hoist — is a classic choice for households with large backyards and heavy washing demands.

Cemented permanently into the ground, this style features a rotating top section with steel wire lines that remain taut and evenly spaced, making it ideal for drying bulky items like sheets, towels, and multiple loads of laundry at once.

It’s particularly well-suited to families who value durability, breeze-assisted drying, and low maintenance over the long term.

The fixed head design means the arms don’t fold down, so it requires a generous amount of lawn space and at least a metre of clearance around the full diameter to rotate freely. Installation is more complex than other styles and typically takes 2 to 3 hours, including digging and setting the concrete footing.

Once in place, it’s incredibly sturdy — many customers keep theirs for decades. While it doesn’t suit small or multi-use yards, and it can’t be removed or relocated easily, the traditional rotary hoist remains a reliable, high-capacity solution for those who have the space and want a tough, enduring clothesline.
